The new Walgett PCYC opened today marking the culmination of a whole of community project and a new chapter for the youth of Walgett ensuring they are equipped with the skills to navigate daily challenges.
The multi-purpose centre was opened by the Governor of NSW, Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley, AC, DSC (Ret’d), NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant, NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione and PCYC CEO Darren Black.
Mr Grant said it was a pleasure to return to Walgett for such an important occasion.
“I know firsthand how invaluable our NSW Police Force’s influence can be on our young people – especially our regional youth,” Mr Grant said.
“This PCYC will work alongside the Department of Education in improving engagement and participation of young people in the community.
“PCYC is supported by the Government to offer invaluable services and programs to young people to reduce juvenile crime and ultimately ensure they can have fun in a safe and secure place,” Mr Grant said.
Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries said the NSW Government is committed to the Walgett community and investing in its young people.
“The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government is making sure our youth have a supportive place to socialise, relax and learn new skills,” Mr Humphries said.
“I am focused on making sure the Government works with the community to ensure this club is a success.
“We need to help our future generations get the support and education they need as valuable members of our community,” Mr Humphries said.
Walgett PCYC received $250,000 in Government funding for the build.
The funding is in addition to the continued funding of existing club managers and in kind support of police officers as case managers.
The PCYC is the first to be co-located with a school and will partner with the Department of Education under the Connected Communities Strategy.
